Thanks to approval by BC Housing, QISHS was approved for $3.5M in funding assistance for the construction of affordable seniors’ housing. The building and site design have to meet the requirements of both BC Housing and the Quathiaski Cove Village Plan, and receive community approval for rezoning. Construction approval by BC Housing was given August 2019.
The new single story residence is designed to provide 16 one-bedroom self-contained units, and will be home to single seniors and couples with low to moderate income who can live independently. There will be provision for seniors needing some assistance in daily living, through a combination of private care and Island Health’s Community Care services. A live-in caretaker will cover maintenance and security for the residence.
The Society’s aim is to foster aging in place and a sense of community in which residents help one another, stay active in the larger community, and have responsibilities to perform as they are able. Feeling useful and valued is an important part of aging with dignity and maintaining a sense of engagement. To that end, each suite has a kitchenette so that residents who want to cook can do so. A communal kitchen, common dining area and living room will be incorporated into the building’s design, encouraging the sharing of meals and activities. All suites will have shower bathrooms with accessibility features, and a tub bath will be available for assisted bathing. Multipurpose rooms are an important part of the building plan.
